In Wilmington, North Carolina on July 10, 1969, I was born to John and Judy Johnson. I am a life-long formed Episcopalian and have lived in Washington, DC since 1993. I consider myself a non-profit government relations professional, friend, brother, son, Godfather, mentor, mentee, sinner and follower of the way.
I grew up in Jesup, GA, from second grade until graduation from Wayne County High School and went on to graduate from Valdosta State College (University in my last year) in 1992 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Speech Communications and Public Relations.
After graduation and a congressional campaign in the ’92 cycle, I found my way to DC and served United States Senators, Sam Nunn and Max Cleland, both democrats from Georgia. These were amazing years, and I’ll never be able to recount all of the experiences and opportunities in one place. I left the Hill to work for the Small Business Administration for three years until 2001 when I was fortunate to join the staff in the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations. I never knew I would love being a lobbyist, but it happened and it’s one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
In 2008, I changed careers to work as a fundraiser at Washington National Cathedral. Following that adventure, I established a government relations office for a national LGBTQIA+ aging organization and then going on to create my own consulting firm. God being hilarious, I took a contract with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in the ELCA Advocacy Office and decided to stay a while—going on almost 8 years now.
I am a member of Washington’s historic St. Thomas’ Parish Episcopal Church in Dupont Circle and have been an active parishioner in the life of the parish since I walked through the door in 1993.
I was elected Senior Warden in 2010 for a three-year term. I was elected to the House of Deputies from my diocese in 2012 and served three terms. I was also elected to the Executive Council for a six-year term. I loved it, but it was hard work to be sure. I have been active in the Diocese of Washington having served on the Search and Nominating Committee for the Ninth Bishop of Washington—Bishop Mariann Budde and a special task force on Washington National Cathedral.
There’s a lot more to the story, but that captures some of the highlights. I love to travel, cook, watch sci-fi and comedy, follow policy and politics (there’s a difference) and enjoy friends and family as much as possible. 2020 is going to be a monumental year! I look forward to sharing more about it.
